St. Colman's Church Mayo Abbey, Co. Mayo Owners: Roman Catholic Church, Diocese of Mayo, Mayo Abbey Parish. Contractor: The OldBuilders Company Job Description: Remedial repairs, installation of new cast iron gutters and down pipes, imbedded in lime mortar over original eve/cap stone, the method utilised in the 1890's roof installation. Removal of recently installed and inadequate PVC gutters. Later works, 2005-6, not yet commissioned, may include roofing, lead work, re-rendering the whole in Lime mortar.
Mayo Abbey,
location of monastic site dating back to the 7th century, gave its name to the
county in 1575, seat of the Diocese of Mayo 1152 to 1631. St. Colman's
church was built in 1845 and remodeled in 1890. The parish now have a
new church and hope to utilise this building as a community or historical
centre. |
